Hail college for shaping their careers
It was an evening filled with nostalgia at The American College’s 136th College Day celebration on Monday as three eminent alumni -- M.S. Jaffar Sait, Additional Director General of Police , film director Karu. Palaniappan and actor Vivek -- shared their memories.
All three of them hailed the college for the crucial role it played in shaping their careers.
Mr. Sait, who was the chief guest, shared how a Professor took personal interest in convincing his father to let him prepare for Union Public Service Commission examination.
“By then, I had attempted several bank examinations and did not get through. Later, I got a teaching job in a leave vacancy and my father was insisting that I should take the offer. It was my Professor who came to my house and pleaded with my father to give me just another year to try for Civil Services. He even offered to pay one year’s salary I would have received in the teaching job,” he said.
Stating that he had faced so many hurdles and hardships in life, Mr. Sait said that it was the learnings and experiences from The American College that gave him the strength to overcome the hardships.
“It was the college that taught us to rebel for the right causes,” he added.
Mr. Palaniappan recalled how the free atmosphere that prevailed on the campus helped students like him to not only carve out a career for themselves but also become individuals concerned about the society.
Highlighting the need for students to become socially and politically aware, he said that it had become particularly important since there was an attempt to homogenise cultural identities by certain forces.
Mr. Vivek recalled how some of the Professors played a critical role in encouraging him to take up creative pursuits when he was just a happy-go-lucky student at the college.
M. Davamani Christober, Principal, presented the annual report of the college.
Rt. Rev. M. Joseph, Bishop, Madurai - Ramnad Diocese, presided over the function. G. C. Abraham, Vice-Principal, and J. Helen Ratna Monica, Bursar, also spoke on the occasion.
